We almost all start out adventurously. I climbed trees, skate-boarded and went ambling through the woods and fields whenever I could find them. At some point, we settle into a rut of responsibilities, our sense of comfort and security at war with our desire to explore until one or the other wins.
Between the duties and to-do's, I simply had to find some kind of escape. It's hardly practical for most of us to go globetrotting, especially the things are now, but there is a little corner of the earth where I've found endless opportunities for exploration: my own back yard. I don't mean identifying the various bugs or wildflowers, snakes and spiders that spring up; I'm talking about a place we are most afraid to explore. What's on the inside, the deepest, innermost caverns of my heart, seems to find its most likely means of coming to the surface when I'm in touch with nature - God's creation.
It began with a few intimate reflections on how the morning emerges from the cricket-chirps that fade into birdsongs like an auditory version of ombré. Through a successions of thoughts, sketches and expressions, the #BackyardDevo posts evolved and I began sharing them with friends and family who were moved to do their own self-exploration by the provoking questions about getting closer to God, knowing ourselves, and discovering who He really is.
I could share a little more about me - my wonderful family. My careers and endeavors. My hobbies, interests and opinions. But this isn't about me. Doing the BackyardDevo is about you - just you and God.
